Mas remained in a difficult mountain stage, 165 kilometers from Torrent to Alto de la Reina, in the lead with the French Victor Lafay and Élie Gesbert. In the steep last hundreds of meters, the 26-year-old Spaniard was too fast for his fellow escapees, of whom Lafay finished second.
An individual time trial over more than 14 kilometers will follow on Saturday. There is another flat stage on Sunday. Mas defends an 8 second lead over Lafay in the race against time. Gesbert is third on 17 counts from the leader. The Swiss Stefan Küng, seventh at 51 seconds, can take a lot of time back on Saturday on his specialty, the time trial. Küng was second this year in the closing time trial of Tirreno-Adriatico behind Wout van Aert. Last year he finished third at the World Cup.
For Mas it was only his fifth victory as a cycling professional, the first in the service of Movistar for which he has played since last year.
