Medvedev took the top position in the world rankings at the end of February. However, he lost it again to Novak Djokovic, when he was eliminated in the third round of the Indian Wells masters tournament.
At the tournament in Miami, Medvedev reached the quarterfinals last year, in which he was eliminated by Roberto Bautista Agut. Now he will not face the Spaniard again in the eighth final, but against the American Jenson Brooksby, who beat Bautista Agut in three sets: 6-3 5-7 6-4. “I hit 14 aces and felt really good. In the second set it was close, but I remained stable,” said Medvedev after his win. If the 26-year-old Russian reaches the semifinals in Miami, he will take over the number 1 position from Djokovic.
Hubert Hurkacz also reached the fourth round in Miami. The eighth seeded Pole won the masters tournament in Florida last year. Against the Russian Aslan Karatsev, Hurkacz needed three sets: 7-5 4-6 6-3.
