Michael van Gerwen continues at World Matchplay and is in the semi-final | Sport

Michael van Gerwen has easily reached the semi-finals of the World Matchplay. The number three in the world was far too strong for Nathan Aspinall (16-9) and will meet Peter Wright tomorrow night.

Van Gerwen soon broke his opponent twice and took a 5-2 lead. Mighty Mike then got three darts to hold his own leg, but he couldn’t find the double sixteen and was broken first. That didn’t cause the Brabant player too many worries, because at the break after ten legs he was neatly ahead 6-4.

Without really playing very well, his average was just above 92, Van Gerwen ran further and further after the break. Aspinall, number eleven on the PDC Order of Merit, averaged even well below 90 and quickly faced a 10-5 deficit.

At 11-6, The Asp had an excellent opportunity to break Van Gerwen back once, but the heavily sweating Englishman missed the opportunity. With that, Aspinall seemed to lose hope and the game was actually over. Van Gerwen increased his average to 94.72 and achieved a percentage of 37.12 on his doubles.

150,000 British Pounds

In the previous two rounds, Van Gerwen beat Damon Heta (first round 10-7 in legs) and Ian White (second round, 11-8 in legs) respectively. The 31-year-old Dutchman is still waiting for his tournament victory in 2021. He did reach a final in the Super Series twice, but had to acknowledge his superiority in José de Sousa and Peter Wright.

Van Gerwen won the World Matchplay twice, but that was a while ago (2015 and 2016). In the last two editions he was killed in the second round. The winner of this year’s major tournament will receive a check for £150,000.

Wright showed no compassion for Michael Smith earlier in the evening in his quarterfinals. The Scottish number two in the world was simply too good in Blackpool, throwing 100.37 average, and winning 16-7.

Semi-finals

The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday evening. Defending champion Dimitri van den Bergh, who won his first major behind closed doors last year, will take on Krzysztof Ratajski.
