A boy riding a bicycle dies in a car accident.Car driver (84) detained

A 7-year-old boy died in a car and bicycle accident Wednesday afternoon. Police in Diepenveen, canton Overijssel, said the 84-year-old man driving the car had been detained. Police said the victim and the suspect were both from Diepenveen.

The incident happened around 4:30 pm in the small village of Schürmansweg, with a population of less than 5,000. A large number of paramedics, including police, paramedics and firefighters, were dispatched to the scene. Police have blocked streets to give health workers a chance to work. A helicopter transporting a trauma team to Schulmansweg turned around before landing.

According to local media, an ambulance transported the boy from the scene around 5:25 pm, but did not leave the scene at high speed. Less than 20 minutes later, police announced the boy was dead.

He had just finished playing football for a local club and was riding his bicycle when he was hit by a car. The cause of the accident was still under investigation hours after the incident.

Diepenveen lies along the border of Overijssel and Gelderland. This village is part of the city of Deventer.
