Modest Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld goes for his chance at Orange | Dutch football

Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld wants to definitely take his chance with the Dutch national team in the coming international match. The attacker is having a strong period at Villarreal and hopes to be an important value in the new system that national coach Louis van Gaal has in mind.

“Even in times when things are going well, you have to remain humble. I don’t want to be too happy about it,” says Danjuma in Zeist, where the Dutch national team is meeting this week for the upcoming practice matches against Denmark (Saturday) and Germany (next Tuesday).

With Villarreal, the 25-year-old former player of NEC, among others, surprisingly reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League last week. The Spaniards won 3-0 against Juventus in Turin, after the first game had ended in 1-1. Danjuma took the third goal himself, from a penalty kick in injury time.

You need to know when to go deep and when to lower. I think I master those qualities too.

,,We knew that if things didn’t go well at Juventus at the beginning, the fans might turn against their own players,’ Danjuma looks back. ,,It was an advantage for us that the away goal no longer counted double. When it remained 0-0 in Italy for a long time, we got more and more space in the second half. It actually went exactly according to plan.”

At his previous club Bournemouth, Danjuma really played on the left, at Villarreal he can also be found in the center of the vanguard. ,,I’m not tied to the sidelines, I have a lot of freedom. That fits well with my game”, explains the fast attacker.

Van Gaal, who tested positive for the coronavirus today and is therefore in isolation for the time being, wants to implement a new game system this week. It is clear that the Orange squad will play with three central defenders. Whether that will be 3-4-3 or 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 is yet to be seen by Van Gaal.

,,I think everyone knows what the national coach set up in 2014. That was also with a different system,” says Danjuma. “If you have a national coach who knows very well how a system works and is very knowledgeable about it, he can quickly teach the players.”

It doesn’t matter to him whether Danjuma comes out on the left or in the center of the front left. ,,I’m not a striker who has to give you long balls and who is good with the head. But I think a new generation of strikers is coming. If you look at how Kylian Mbappé functions in the striker. And Erling Haaland too, with lots of deep runs. You need to know when to go deep and when to slump. I think I master those qualities too.”
