More acute health complaints in the region around Tata Steel than elsewhere | Inland

In the IJmond region, including the Tata Steel steel factory, shipping, air traffic and heavy road transport, there are many more specific health complaints than elsewhere in the Netherlands, the province of Noord-Holland reports on the basis of research by the RIVM.

These are mainly stomach or stomach complaints, nausea or vomiting, eye discomfort, pain or pressure in the chest, headache, dizziness, tightness and itching. In addition, chronic diseases of the heart, lung cancer and diabetes are more common.

The RIVM compared GP data from the IJmond with that of other industrial areas in the Netherlands and with the countryside. Air quality was also investigated. “This shows that the air quality in the IJmond is more often moderate to insufficient than in locations without industry. Until now, average emissions in the IJmond were mainly looked at over longer periods, but residents experience the peaks in emissions mainly as a nuisance ”, according to the province.

According to Deputy Jeroen Olthof, the report confirms the image that residents have had for years. “We recognize the concerns of our residents. The research results underline the necessity and importance of a healthier living environment in the IJmond. Together with the North Sea Canal Area environmental service, I will continue to focus strongly on tightening up the environmental permit and strict supervision and enforcement, ”says Olthof. According to him, the current rules do not suffice.
