“On the night of February 24, our colleague was off duty and was spending time with family when the murder happened,” said Will Turner, MSF emergency response manager for Syria. “We are now trying to better understand the situation and circumstances surrounding death.”
Shortly after the murder, the aid organization was hit by a second tragedy. Three days later, the four-year-old daughter of another staff member died when a fire broke out in a tent where a wedding was being celebrated. At least seven people were killed in this fire. MSF does not wish to comment further on the identity of the worker who died or of the child.
Due to the events, MSF is also temporarily halting its activities in the camp. In the camp, where more than 30 victims have been killed this year, it has become too dangerous. “People are murdered with brutal frequency, often in the tents where they live,” Turner says. “Many of the dead leave children who have no one else to take care of them. This nightmare has to stop. ”
