Spain has reacted with shock to the discovery of a girl at the bottom of the sea near Tenerife. The body of 6-year-old Olivia was in a bag, tied to an anchor. The girl, along with her younger sister Anna, was abducted by her father, Tomás Gimeno, in Tenerife on April 27. There is no trace of them.
The 37-year-old father Tomás Gimeno was separated from mother Beatriz. He informed his ex at the end of April that he would not bring the two children back and that she would never see them again.
The next day, a small boat owned by Gimeno was found bobbing at sea. After a long search, including a ship from the Spanish Oceanographic Institute, a robot a thousand meters below sea level and about 5.5 kilometers off the coast of Tenerife has found a large bag containing the body of Olivia. The bag was tied to an anchor on the bottom. No trace has yet been found of her 1-year-old sister and of the father. Rescue workers continue to search for the missing Anna at sea.
The island of Tenerife is in mourning. “Nobody wanted to believe it,” said Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermudez. “The city council and all citizens are heartbroken. It’s unfair, cruel and totally undeserved for the girls and their families.”
Prime Minister Pedo Sánchez said he could not imagine the mother’s pain. Equality Minister Irene Montero Gil said this is violence against women and mothers. According to the minister, this violence affects the mothers where it hurts the most.
Since 2013, according to official figures, an average of nearly six minors have been murdered each year by their fathers, mother’s partners or ex-partners. Feminist activist groups have called for demonstrations in Spanish cities against this violence.
