Mysterious cameras in residential area now gone, but what were they doing there? | Car

As quickly as they appeared, two cameras are also gone from a street in Soesterberg. The devices scanned license plates for a week, police said.




Local residents were shocked last week when two prominent cameras arose in their quiet neighborhood. Why, they wondered, but they were none the wiser. Police have now announced that the cameras have already been packed.

“They were indeed ANPR cameras,” says a spokesman for the national police unit. “Suppose someone has passed on a license plate number after a house burglary and the same car drives into that neighborhood late at night, then a signal is sent to officers in the area.” The same applies to other infamous license plates, for example of people who still have outstanding fines.
