Former European Commissioner and VVD prominent Neelie Kroes lobbied for the American company Uber in 2015 and 2016. This while the European Commission had explicitly forbidden her to take up a position at the company. That is the conclusion of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which received leaked documents from the British newspaper The Guardian†
Neelie Kroes was European Commissioner from 2004 to 2014, divided over two periods. From 2004 to 2010 she was in charge of Competition, and from 2010 to 2014 Kroes was responsible for the Digital Agenda portfolio. After that period, Kroes asked in Brussels for permission to work for Uber. That was partly rejected by the president of the European Commission at the time, Jean-Claude Juncker. Kroes was asked from Brussels to adhere to the ‘cooling off period’ of eighteen months in order to prevent possible conflicts of interest.
It now appears that Kroes did lobby informally for Uber in 2015. She approached government officials (Henk Kamp, Melanie Schultz, Wilma Mansveld and Jeroen Dijsselbloem), top civil servants and Prime Minister Mark Rutte on behalf of Uber. In May 2016, Kroes officially took office as chair of Uber’s advisory board. Kroes says she had “no informal or formal role” at Uber before that appointment.
Uber wanted to influence taxi legislation and criminal investigation
The billion-dollar company wanted to influence taxi legislation and a criminal investigation into Uber through Kroes. This is evident from the Uber Files, more than 124,000 internal Uber documents. Those documents were leaked to The Guardian, which she shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). The leak contains company documents, emails, meeting minutes, memos and instant messages. In the Netherlands, Platform Investico, Trouw and Het Financieele Dagblad investigated the Uber Files.
