New setup Premier League darts may appeal to Van Gerwen

Michael van Gerwen is satisfied with the new set-up of the Premier League darts for the time being. Instead of individual rounds per evening, a mini tournament is now played every evening according to a waste system.

“It’s fun for the people at home and the audience that is there once. You are looking at a climax. And with a bit of luck you will see your favorite player come up more often than once”, says Van Gerwen.

“On the other hand, you wonder: what does this do after fourteen or fifteen weeks, because you often play against the same opponents? Is it still fun then? The future should show that. The PDC does everything it can to make it as fun as possible for people at home.”

Van Gerwen (32) has already won the Premier League five times, but in 2020 and 2021 he had to leave the title to Glen Durrant and Jonny Clayton respectively. “It is actually a large demonstration tournament, but it is the most important event after the World Cup. You now have to win three matches at the highest level in one evening and it gives a lot of feeling when that happens.”

Van Gerwen will face Michael Smith, the number 2 of the last World Cup, in the first round on Thursday evening.
