Kei Nishikori is the first to qualify for the quarter finals of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam. The 31-year-old Japanese was too strong for the Australian Alex de Minaur in the second round.
The number 45 in the world triumphed after more than 2 hours in three sets: 6-3 2-6 7-5. Minaur, nine years his junior, is in 23rd place in the global rankings.
Nishikori will play in the quarterfinals against the winner of the game between the Serbian Dusan Lajovic and the Croatian Borna Coric. Lajovic stunted earlier on Wednesday with a win over first-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev. Coric eliminated debutant Botic van de Zandschulp late last night.
Nishikori, the former number 4 in the world, had received a wildcard from tournament director Richard Krajicek. However, due to a number of cancellations, he no longer needed them in Rotterdam.
Nishikori makes his second appearance in Ahoy. Two years ago he reached the semi-finals.
