North Korea withdraws from World Cup qualification due to corona | Football

The isolated country had already written to the Asian Football Federation (AFC) at the beginning of this month, because the North Korean regime would find it too dangerous in the current corona pandemic to send the football players on a trip.

The AFC asked North Korea to reconsider the decision, but the Asian federation reported on Sunday that the country has officially withdrawn. The global federation FIFA must now decide what will happen to the group that North Korea was in. Due to the corona crisis, the remaining World Cup qualifying matches in Asia will be played in central locations next month. North Korea would go to neighboring South Korea.

The North Koreans were in full swing to qualify for the next qualifying round, in which tickets to the World Cup can be earned. After five of eight qualifying games, North Korea was in fourth place, only 1 point behind league-leader Turkmenistan. The eight group winners and the four best numbers 2 compete in the third qualifying round for placement for the World Cup.

In the past, North Korea has been present at the World Championship twice. The quarter finals were reached in 1966. During the 2010 edition, the group stage was the final destination.

North Korea previously opted out for the Olympic Games in Japan next summer due to the corona pandemic.
