Whether you work from home or from sunny Barcelona, it doesn’t really matter that much anymore. Millennials, in particular, long to work in another country. But getting your employer this far turns out to be quite difficult. Organization Sweet Spot Abroad makes it easier for companies to have staff temporarily work from abroad.
Those who sign up for Sweet Spot Abroad will leave for Barcelona for one to five months. Cape Town will soon be added as an option. Companies such as Randstad, Heineken and Traffic Builders are already working with the organization and offer staff the opportunity to make such a journey. The first group of employees has just returned from Barcelona, where they worked every day but also organized a lot of fun things.
Experience new things
Co-founder Verhage saw that the participants returned home happier and more relaxed than when they came. ,,We did a survey at the beginning and at the end, we saw improvement in everyone. Some doubted whether it would be good for their productivity, but in the end everyone was already working at 7:30 AM every morning so that they could finish their work and then do fun things.”

According to Verhage, going abroad is a tool to get employees out of the work rut. “You’re just doing your job, but you’re suddenly in a different environment with other people. Experiencing new things is a great need of a certain group of workers. These are mainly the millennials.”

In order to attract and keep this group of employees on board, employers must meet their needs, says Verhage. “You have to give them a reason to stay. One of the participants said that he was thinking of a new job before the trip. That idea has now completely faded into the background.”
Volleyball on the beach
The trip was also a way for a large part of the group to recharge after working from home in corona time. This also applies to participant Jorin van Lindenberg (32), SEA Product Manager at digital marketing agency Traffic Builders. He was allowed to go to Barcelona for three weeks as a test from his boss. “Not much has changed in my working days. The customers I video called might only notice it from the view of the Sagrada Familia. But I got a lot more out of my day there.”
After work, the group did something fun every day: playing volleyball on the beach, eating tapas or going for a walk in the mountains. “That was a breath of fresh air after the corona period. And that has nothing to do with a high workload, I just really missed the social contact and the incentives. The group and the training sessions there have given me energy again.”
The training courses are part of the temporary stay abroad. Van Lindenberg followed training courses that taught him, among other things, how to achieve his goals and how best to prevent work stress. “It was a kind of burnout prevention, but in a very nice way.”

Show employees that you trust them
Software testing company Salves sought a partnership with Sweet Spot Abroad to give employees more happiness at work. ,,Your manager shows that he trusts you and knows that you are not going to abuse it. That gives a sense of autonomy and freedom,” says account manager Sam Coppens.
But Salves does not only do it for the job satisfaction of the staff, the company also benefits from it. “If someone wants to work for you, they will do their job better.” Coppens hopes that more employers will consider this kind of opportunity. “Try to lead the way as a company. Working from home or remotely is nothing new and will only get bigger.”

Salves wants to offer the opportunity to work abroad throughout the organization. “A great opportunity for all employees who have been working from home for almost 1.5 years and who are ready for some variety,” says Coppens. ,,One person thinks working from home is fine, the other is screaming mad. Then it’s nice if you can take a break. First I go to Barcelona myself to see what it is like to work there. I will also meet the trainers. But I really believe it will help the workers.”
Expand to Cape Town
Companies that are interested, however, have to pull the wallet. Companies pay around 700 euros per week per employee for training, accommodation, co-working space and events. ,,But in the end the costs are not that bad”, says Verhage. The training part is fully covered by training costs, which are tax deductible. In the Netherlands you quickly pay 500 to 1000 euros just for a day training.”
Sweet Spot Abroad is also working on a second location: Cape Town. But first, Verhage wants to wait and see how the corona situation develops there. “The city was closed for a long time, we first want to do our own research there and experience everything ourselves before we send people there.”
