Netherlands at the Tokyo Olympics
The Dutch team consists of 288 people, the largest Olympic team in the Netherlands, representing 25 of the 33 sports being played. At the opening ceremony on Friday, only 42 athletes and team members will raise the flag.
“We haven’t accepted the entire team yet. There are quite a few athletes staying elsewhere and many athletes are taking action very early on,” said a retired swimmer. Yes, Olympic triple champion Pieter van den Hogenband, 2021 team chef demission explained. “Other countries also participate in less than usual delegations. Athletes are careful and don’t want to risk getting infected just before the tournament.”
King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima wish the Dutch team good luck, but will not attend any event in the coming weeks. “I can’t go to Tokyo, but we follow your match and are confident in the beautiful and successful game. The Netherlands is looking forward to your performance,” they said.
Two Dutch athletes test positive for COVID-19
In the past few weeks, a total of 106 Olympic team members have been positive for coronavirus, three of whom were members of the Dutch team. Skateboarder Candy Jacobs, Taekwondo star Reshmie Oogink, and boat team staff.
The infection has made the Dutch team cautious, but the Van den Hogen band remains calm. “We are in control of it,” he said. “This is a scenario we have already taken into account,” Archer Gabriela Schloesser-Bayardo explained, as Chef de Mission called on all team members to be careful and keep a distance.
Olympic athletes are facing strict coronavirus protection at the Olympic Hotel, where they are staying before being transferred to the Olympic Village a few days before the first event. Athletes are required to fill out a health check form daily and perform a self-test every morning. Friday’s opening ceremony (and most sporting events) takes place with a very limited audience.
The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games will begin on Friday, July 23, at 1:00 pm (Netherlands time), and NOS will begin coverage at 12:35 pm.
