Amsterdam hosts New Year’s Eve fireworks show at Museumplein

The City of Amsterdam will host professional fireworks shows at several locations around the city on New Year’s Eve this year. The city’s main New Year’s celebration takes place on Museumplein with both a fireworks and light show. Mayor Femke Halsema said other fireworks shows are still being discussed with experts.

Last year, the main New Year’s celebration was also planned to be held on the Museumplein. It was canceled due to the influence of the new coronavirus infection at that time.

Amsterdam is one of the few municipalities to completely ban fireworks. According to the city, a majority of Amsterdam residents have had “enough with fireworks nuisance” and a majority support a total ban on consumer fireworks. You can still purchase from vendors.

Halsema doesn’t think the city will be freed from people launching consumer fireworks this year. “For decades, setting off your own fireworks was the norm,” the mayor said.

“Now the city has to get used to the new situation.”
