Piece of concrete comes loose in the Eindhoven Airport parking garage

The parking garage P1 at Eindhoven Airport was closed this morning after a piece of concrete fell down. It is the same parking garage that partially collapsed in 2017.

“This half-square-meter piece of concrete appears to come out of the first floor between the ground floor and the first floor. The parking garage has been closed as a precaution,” said an Eindhoven Airport spokesperson. “The inspection is now going to find out what the cause is. It is likely that it is due to the frost, but that must be confirmed.”

The parking garage is expected to be open again in the morning. There was no inconvenience because there are no flights departing from the airport and there are therefore no cars in the garage. “There was also nobody in the garage when the piece fell.”

Collapsed due to construction error

In 2017, part of the new parking garage collapsed due to construction errors. According to the spokesman, this piece fell from another part of the same garage. There were no injuries at the time.

The garage collapsed due to a technical fault in floor slabs, in combination with the forces that were placed on it. All municipalities then had to investigate by the ministry whether there were buildings of the same construction.

How it could go wrong, you can see in this animation:
