‘Gronings Gas 2.0’ exhibition opens at earthquake epicenter – The Northern Times

The non-profit non-fiction photo presents Gronings Gas 2.0, a photo exhibition about the past, present and future of the Groningen gas field. The event begins in Oudehi Pastry in Loppersum, one of the villages most affected by earthquakes and tremors from excavation.

Hundreds of earthquakes have hit the north of the Netherlands in recent years, damaging thousands of homes. Loppersam is the site of the worst recorded earthquake damage in many years. Local photographers Jan Zeeman, Kees van de Veen, Anjo de Haan, Corne Sparidaens and Joost Nuijten highlight the problems facing struggling communities and look with hope to future solutions I’m here. The expo aims to start a discussion about the future of mining activity in the region.

Exhibition curator Andrea Hoeymans hopes the event will help raise awareness of the impact gas drilling has on people’s lives. “You can’t act without knowing. This exhibition may help find solutions to the predicament that the region and nation are facing today. We need to hear the opinions of the people of Groningen. There is,” she says.

The Loppersum event is part of the launch of EPIQ, an educational museum centre. EPIQ aims to provide information on gas extraction, earthquakes and energy in the region.

The Groningen oil field has been an important source of natural gas and income for the Netherlands since the 1960s. However, earthquakes and tremors associated with gas extraction at the oilfield have caused stress and misery for local residents, leading the government to announce he will close the oilfield by the end of 2024.

The move comes as Europe scrambles to replace fossil fuels in Russia in the wake of conflicts with Moscow and Ukraine, with European governments funding large-scale public assistance packages to support households and businesses. and occurs when energy prices are skyrocketing.

The gas will be extracted by a joint venture between Shell and ExxonMobil, and any earthquake damage will have to be borne by ExxonMobil.

The Gronings Gas 2.0 exhibition will be free and open to the public every Thursday to Saturday from 12.00 to 17.00 from 30 March to 1 July 2023. For more information about the event, please visit www.nonfictionphoto.nl.
