After a chaotic year, Schiphol cancels staff New Year’s party

Schiphol Airport will not host a New Year’s party for colleagues this year as the airport wants to focus fully on its operations. Following a report from Luchtvaartnieuws, a spokesperson confirmed the change in plans.

“Our priority right now is not the New Year’s reception, but our activities,” she said. It is believed to be the first time Schiphol has skipped a New Year’s gathering outside of the past two years due to coronavirus restrictions.

Schiphol Airport experienced major problems during the spring, summer and part of last year due to a shortage of security and baggage handling personnel. Wait times were huge, security checkpoints occurred, and many people missed their flights as a result.

Interim CEO Root Sondag said last month that Schiphol lost control of many aspects of its business as much of the organization was outsourced. “Operational challenges have faded into the background in recent years,” Sondag said. “You lose knowledge and control” as a result of presenting a contract to a company that bids.

Airports are trying to attract new security guards through a massive recruitment campaign. Schiphol expects it will still need hundreds of new guards for this summer season.

Crowded again this week

Travelers at Schiphol Airport have again complained about long lines on Monday morning. A spokeswoman said this was due to a shortage of security guards.

He said wait times are typically 45 minutes to an hour maximum. However, he claimed the crowds weren’t as bad as they were last summer.
