Producer Russell T. Davies returns for BBC hit Doctor Who | TV

The most important choice Davies has to make is who should succeed the current protagonist, Jodie Whittaker. Whittaker is the thirteenth actor since 1963 to play the role of the time traveler.

The return of Doctor Who in 2005 was a big surprise, after the series had stopped ten years earlier. The series’ newfound popularity is largely due to Davies, who oversaw all the artistic choices for five years. After his departure in 2010, the producer made the acclaimed series It’s a sin, about how the gay community was attacked by the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s.

British media this summer suggested that Olly Alexander may be the next actor to take on the role of Doctor Who. Alexander, 30, who rose to fame as the frontman of the band Years & Years, has previously received praise for his role as Ritchie in It’s a sin.
