It will still be a few weeks before Tesla can start production of cars at its German ‘gigafactory’ near Berlin. According to the authorities in the state of Brandenburg, where the factory is located, the approval process is in its final phase.
According to the Brandenburg Ministry of the Environment, it will nevertheless “take a while” before production can start. Regional media write that the factory will not be started before March.
Tesla started construction of the car assembly plant in 2019, after the company received preliminary approval. Actually, production should have started last year. However, local authorities are still evaluating the plant’s environmental impacts, with particular concerns over water consumption.
When fully operational, the factory will be capable of producing 500,000 electric cars per year.
