PSV coach Roger Schmidt was disappointed, but not inconsolable after PSV’s 5-0 punishment in the Johan Cruijff Arena. According to the trainer, there were enough reasons why the topper for his team did not go as he had hoped beforehand.
,,Ajax has been playing together for a long time, with the same players and the same trainer. They have some real top players at their disposal. So no, I’m not sick of this. This is the most difficult race in the Netherlands, but also one of the most difficult in Europe. On a good day we can beat them, we have also shown that in the Johan Cruijff Scale.”
Schmidt has not given up hope of becoming champion, although he does not see it rosy. “We need a perfect season for that. Everyone can see that Ajax has a better chance of that. We cannot say that we have the same chances as Ajax, it is not 50/50, but rather 80/20. And after a day like today it becomes even more difficult.”
The fact that he had to do without his injured players Cody Gakpo and Noni Madueke was an extra handicap for Schmidt. ,,Those are weapons, players with speed. We also played in the Europa League on Thursday. I don’t want to look for excuses, but it’s a fact.”
The German trainer thought it unnecessary that the defeat ultimately turned out so large. ,,The last 30 minutes Ajax has shown its qualities, also in the quick transition. We could and should have done it smarter in that phase. But the first sixty minutes it was an open game. Ajax was dangerous, but we also had our moments.”
“Of course we’re not giving up. But it is difficult to stay ahead of Ajax in 34 competition matches. That will be a hell of a job. At the beginning of the season we played at a top level. That has not been the case lately. We’re going to work on that. We are going to train and recover, also mentally. FC Twente awaits next week.”
Mario Götze saw that hope for a good result disappeared after the second goal against Sébastien Haller in the 56th minute. Ajax then ran away to 5-0. ,,That was not good for us, that goal from that corner. That was unfortunate. In the end we lose 5-0. This was not a good day for us.”
PSV started well in the Johan Cruijff ArenA and had the first chances. Götze: ,,Ajax plays very well, especially on the ball. We had to think of something about that and we did that well for the first 10 to 15 minutes.”
The difference in quality became clear afterwards. Götze did not want to say after the large defeat that the difference with Ajax is too great and that PSV has no chance for the title. ,,I know from experience how difficult it is to become champion. A season is long and it’s all about being stable. It won’t be ready until the end of the season, not already.”
