Ambassador Keith van Barr

As the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Vietnam, I am proud to celebrate my first King’s Day in beautiful Vietnam. The fact that we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations between the two countries makes it even more special.

King’s Day is a national holiday in the Netherlands that celebrates the birthday of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander. This day is an opportunity for us to unite in our diversity and reflect on the fundamental values that unite us as a nation.

The ongoing war in Ukraine and conflicts in other parts of the world are reminders that we cannot take our basic freedoms for granted. The Netherlands will continue to support Ukraine and remain deeply committed to protecting and promoting fundamental freedoms around the world.

One way to ensure the protection of fundamental freedoms is to strengthen the rules-based international order and unite against those who seek to undermine it. Both of our countries are shaped by their geographical location. Seas, rivers dominate the landscape, and there are larger and more powerful neighbors. This has also formed our national identity. We are both open, outgoing, and enterprising. We share a concern for a strong international order in which no country acts with impunity. And both Vietnam and the Netherlands benefit from high seas and open markets.

The geographical similarities between the two countries are also why strategic partnerships in the areas of water management and climate adaptation are central to their relationship. Most of our activities in this area are focused specifically on the Mekong Delta, and we also work closely with Vietnam in the field of agriculture.

It is remarkable to see how much the relationship between the two countries has developed. Over the past 50 years, our two countries have built a strong partnership based on mutual respect, trust and cooperation. It has evolved from a partnership based on development cooperation to one in which trade and investment play a key role.

The Netherlands is currently the largest European investor in Vietnam and Vietnam’s largest export destination within the EU. The value of exports increased from €7 billion in 2021 to €10 billion in 2022. Interest from Dutch companies in Vietnam is high, as evidenced by the number of trade missions heading to Vietnam. Vietnam can leverage the diversification of supply chains in the region to further promote foreign direct investment. To that end, it is important that investor confidence is high and that government agencies spend all of their planned funds on critical areas, especially infrastructure.

The next 50 years will bring unprecedented challenges. Among these are issues related to climate change. These will affect the whole world, and Vietnam and the Netherlands are no exception. As Vietnam’s partner, the Netherlands welcomes Vietnam’s green ambitions and commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2050. We remain committed to supporting Vietnam’s green transition together with Dutch companies and investors.

As we look to the future, we are confident that our partnership will continue to grow and prosper. Our governments, businesses and people enjoy good relations and are united in their desire for a sustainable and inclusive world. Together, we can build a brighter future for our people and for generations to come.

On behalf of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, I wish the Vietnamese people a happy King’s Day and a prosperous future.

We thank you for your friendship and partnership over the past 50 years and look forward to continuing our cooperation and cooperation in the future.
