Record turnover for supers in the Easter period | Economy

The Easter period meant peak activity for the supermarkets. According to market researcher Nielsen, the supers accounted for a turnover of 974 million euros in the week before Easter. This has improved the previous record of 915 million euros that was put in the books last year.

Nielsen emphasizes that Easter fell a few weeks after the implementation of various corona measures last year. The Dutch had to stay at home while many catering establishments were still starting up, for example, take-away options. This year, the catering industry responded to Easter, with breakfast, lunch and meal boxes. Nielsen calls it surprising that a record was achieved in terms of supermarket turnover.

The Easter turnover was still lower than that of the ‘panic culture’ last year in March. In week 11, the Dutch bought en masse from the supermarkets because a lot was still unclear about the impact of the corona virus. That left empty shelves. Sales that week were 995 million euros.

According to Nielsen, supermarket sales will increase further in the near future because a large part of the catering industry is still closed.
