Governments and care organizations must do more to give qualified refugees access to health care jobs, a government advisory board on migrant ACVZ said in a report released Tuesday. Stated.

The Netherlands currently has a shortage of about 56,000 health workers, which could reach 130,000 by 2030.

The Commission concluded that the coronavirus crisis made no difference when it came to encouraging refugees with a healthcare background to move forward. However, at the beginning of the pandemic, about 173 doctors and 23 nurses provided services through foreign accredited physician associations.

The COA Refugee Resolution Agency has found another 37 asylum seekers with sufficient language and training skills to qualify for a care job. But in the end, only three volunteered at the Ikazia Hospital in Rotterdam through the Red Cross.

Refugees face many legal and administrative obstacles to working in healthcare. Not only do they have to wait years for the asylum claim to be processed, but then they have to go through a long and costly four-year retraining process.

When they get to work, they are often left to their devices and regularly face stigma and discrimination by patients and colleagues, the report said.

To resolve these issues, the Commission said local governments, educational institutions, and the care sector must encourage asylum-seekers and refugees who want to work in care as much as possible.

In particular, foreign qualifications should be evaluated more quickly, and medical institutions should focus on a safe working environment, for example by referrals to interpreters and cultural intermediaries as needed.
