The Slovak Republic is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The Netherlands and Slovakia cooperate both at the bilateral level and within the European Union and NATO. Both countries promote open and inclusive societies and democratic values ​​and freedoms.

The main shared themes are rule of law, education, freedom of the press, liberation and support for Ukraine. Both Slovakia and the Netherlands attach great importance to transitioning to a circular economy, fighting climate change and conserving biodiversity. During the visit, the two countries will explore how they can strengthen each other’s efforts in these areas. The state visit will also strengthen the bonds of friendship between the two countries.

March 7th and 8th: Bratislava

At the start of the visit, the King and Queen will be welcomed by President Čaptova at the Presidential Palace in Bratislava. After this, the royal couple lays a wreath at Devin’s Liberty Gate, a memorial to those killed trying to cross the Iron Curtain between 1948 and 1989.

In the afternoon, visit Tepláreň, an LGBTIQ+ bar where two people were shot dead on October 12, 2022 for their sexual orientation. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima will speak to friends and relatives of the victims, as well as survivors of the attacks. At the end of the afternoon, a reception will be held for the Slovak Dutch community.
