The race was won by former Formula 1 driver Marcus Ericsson. Van Kalmthout, better known in the United States as VeeKay, won a spot at the restart in the absolute final phase. The race had previously been stopped after a crash by Romain Grosjean. After the interruption, Will Power’s car, the leader at the time, wouldn’t start. Van Kalmthout then passed Takuma Sato at the restart, who had overtaken him just before Grosjean’s crash.
Earlier in the day, the Detroit Grand Prix was halted for much longer after a hard blow from Felix Rosenqvist. He was taken to hospital, but was continuously conscious. There will be another race in Detroit on Sunday. The seven races so far this IndyCar season have each produced a different winner. Van Kalmthout triumphed earlier this year in Indianapolis.
