Rob Cross challenges Michael van Gerwen to clash in Gibraltar | Sport

Program,,Michael is a fantastic player. But if I reach my own level, he has to play well to win”, Rob Cross looks ahead to the clash with Michael van Gerwen in the second round of the Gibraltar Darts Trophy. “There’s a lot more in the tank for me and I have to show that now.”

Cross certainly likes to think back to the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018. At the time, the Briton defeated the then reigning champion Van Gerwen in a real thriller 6-5 in sets. Cross, who also defeated Phil Taylor in the final, rarely showed the level of that World Cup.

Van Gerwen has also had a difficult period in sports since the outbreak of corona, but last week finally managed to take a title again. ,,When you get out of such a difficult period, it’s all about winning. It doesn’t matter what kind of tournament it is at such a moment,” said Van Gerwen after his overall victory at the Nordic Darts Masters.

However, miracles should not yet be expected from him, he also stated. ,,You shouldn’t think that I’m going to win tournaments every week again. The field is far too strong for that these days. This is especially a big boost to show more beautiful things again. In the end, only that world title counts, but it hasn’t gotten any easier.”

Van Gerwen left last Tuesday, after a short stay in the Netherlands, confidently towards Gibraltar. The match of the 32-year-old Vlijmenaar against Cross is programmed sixth in the evening session. In the afternoon session, the other two Dutchmen come into action. Dirk van Duijvenbode will face Ted Evetts and Danny Noppert will face Andreas Harryson.

The Gibraltar Darts Masters started on Friday. Where Van Gerwen in the first round a bye Cross had to get to work right away. He triumphed 6-4 in legs over Patrik Kovacs. In the first selection, two Dutchmen were eliminated. Martijn Kleermaker lost (5-6) to Joe Murnan and Geert Nentjes went down (0-6) against Adam Hunt.
