Rotterdam invites everyone to sing together! The countdown to the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 has begun, and the city of Rotterdam is festively decorated for that opportunity!
The boldly colored “Mega Ribbon” runs from Rotterdam Central Station to Ahoy Arena and is packed with lyrics from the winning songs of the previous edition of the festival. The bright colors are inspired by the flags of the different countries that participated in the contest. Take a look at the mockup photos below to see what’s waiting for Rotterdam this spring.
Pandemic Eurovision experience in Rotterdam
The event initially expected an influx of people into Rotterdam and was sufficient to fill the large Ahoy Arena, but of course, due to the coronavirus pandemic, a reduced version will be made instead. As a Fieldlab experiment, it was announced that a small audience would participate in Ahoy’s Eurovision.
Flags and lyrics appearing in Eurovision City Dressing
Studio Vollaers Zwart, a well-known Dutch design studio, is honored to design Rotterdam city dressings at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Their concept is called “Sing Along City”. The flags of the participating countries are the basis of bright and bold colors, and the text consists of the lyrics of the previous Eurovision Song Contest. There have been 67 winning songs so far, so there are lots of lyrics!
Artistic decorations range from photography to light art, street art and installations. Not only are famous landmarks such as the Erasmus Bridge and interesting buildings such as the Cube House and Marktal decorated for Eurovision, but also the highways, trams, windmills and containers of Rotterdam’s famous harbor. Will be done.
Studio Volerswart, responsible for the popular “Tunnel of Love” light feature, is renowned for his architectural installations and frequently creates great designs for international, national and local festivals.
Design of Sing Along City throughout Rotterdam for Eurovision
Concerned about how to devise a “Eurovision experience” in the city when a pandemic occurs, many plans turn around when the so-called “normal” version of Eurovision is no longer feasible. I needed to. But that doesn’t mean there are no signs of a song contest in the Netherlands. As time approaches, the bright colors of Rotterdam’s roads and buildings cannot be overlooked.
