The remuneration of Carlos Tavares, the CEO of the car group Stellantis, has caused quite a stir in France. President Emmanuel Macron called the reward of tens of millions of euros shocking. He received support from his presidential challenger Marine Le Pen.

Tavares was good for a reward of 19 million euros last year. The fixed salary amounted to 2 million euros. The rest was about bonuses. In addition, Tavares is entitled to a share package worth EUR 32 million. Stellantis, the company behind brands such as Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Fiat and Chrysler, also has long-term agreements with Tavares totaling 25 million euros.

Macron called the reward not only shocking but also excessive. “We are talking about astronomical amounts here,” the incumbent president told radio station franceinfo. He also mentioned the introduction of a salary ceiling. According to him, this should be implemented across Europe.

According to Le Pen, work should be done on share packages for staff to prevent these kinds of rewards in the future.
