New night train from Groningen to Schiphol to depart in January – Northern Times

Plans to implement a regular night train service between the Groningen and Randstad areas are finally due to start on January 21st. Dagblad van het Noorden report.

The new service aims to fill a large gap in the Arriba-operated night train network with stops in Assen, Zwolle, Lelystad, Almere and Amsterdam South en route between Groningen and Schiphol Airport.

Initially, the service will run once a week, departing Groningen Central Station at 1:48 am on Saturday and arriving in Schiphol at 3:50 am on the same day.

On the return journey, the train leaves Schiphol on Saturday at 05:07 and arrives in Groningen at 07:17. If this succeeds, more routes may follow.

Arriva filed a request with the Consumer Market Authority (ACM) in June 2021 for permission to operate night trains. A few months later, ACM gave the carrier permission to operate the new service from 2023 onwards.

From 2021, operators will be able to provide transport services at their own risk and without government concessions. Rail transport based on so-called open access. With these services, Arriva is meeting the growing demand for night trains nationwide.
