The Russian state gas company Gazprom, the largest supplier of natural gas to Europe, would no longer send gas via major gas routes that run through Ukraine based on the auction results next month. It would like to send only limited supplies to Poland.
Prices sharply up
This move was immediately felt on the international gas market on Monday. Prices of futures contracts for Dutch natural gas rose 13% in the middle of the day, after falling slightly last week.
As economies recovering from the corona crisis and low gas supplies pick up, energy prices in Europe have recently risen sharply. Several companies have had to reduce all their production as a result. At the end of last week, the Dutch government also announced measures to compensate households for the impending higher energy bill.
