Rutte wants to look at a supplement of 500 euros for low and middle incomes

The government does see opportunities this year to do something about the purchasing power of people with a low or middle income. In the debate on the Spring Memorandum, Prime Minister Rutte opened the door a crack this afternoon for a proposal from the left-wing opposition parties. They want to give people who are already receiving health care allowance an ‘autumn allowance’ of 500 euros.

The energy crisis and inflation are putting pressure on the purchasing power of people with a low or middle income in particular. The cabinet presented a package of 6 billion euros for the lowest incomes this spring. Minimum wages receive an energy allowance of 800 euros, the minimum wage and the AOW are increased and the energy tax is reduced.

In the debate, the opposition parties drew attention to middle-income earners, who are not benefiting enough from the support package. Just like the coalition parties, Rutte feels something for a little extra for people who already receive health care benefits. These are people who earn a maximum of approximately 32,000 euros gross per year. For two-income couples, the limit is about 41,000 euros per year.

Technically complicated

Rutte wants to investigate further, but he must point out that the implementation of such a surcharge is technically complicated and that he wants to know how the measure should be paid. “But we think that 500 euros may still be possible this year,” said Rutte. The opposition is thinking of a levy for companies that are doing well because of the war in Ukraine and rising prices.

GroenLinks and PvdA, who also made the proposal before in negotiations with the cabinet, want the extra support for the low-middle incomes to be arranged before the summer, so that the money can be transferred as quickly as possible. Rutte wants to “see it seriously”, but sees no reason for so much haste. According to him, the effects of the first aid package of 6 billion are only now becoming noticeable.

Earlier, Rutte and Minister of Finance Kaag said that they saw few opportunities to do anything about purchasing power this year.

No decisions are being made today about the extra purchasing power measures. The cabinet will first review all proposals from the House of Representatives. The debate on the Spring Memorandum will be resumed later.
