The Swiss justice believes that SBM Offshore took too few measures to prevent the bribery of officials in Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and Angola. In total, the Swiss have identified $23 million in bribes.
They ignore a controversial payment of $35 million. The Swiss Attorney General speaks of multiple and serious violations of the law. Last year, former CEO Didier Keller was convicted of bribery in the Alpine country. He was fined and a suspended prison sentence.
The Swiss fine follows settlements in the Netherlands, the US and Brazil on which SBM Offshore had to spend no less than $830 million in recent years. SBM has announced that it has now improved its life. It hopes to draw a line under the corruption past.
One of the outstanding questions is whether the authorities in Angola, for example, will continue to prosecute SBM Offshore.
