Antonio Cairoli will end his career after this season. The almost 36-year-old Italian became world champion seven times in his career in the premier class of motocross, the MXGP. He took the world title twice in the MX2 class.
“It was not an easy decision, but it feels like the right time to stop,” Cairoli said in a statement on his team’s KTM website. “My goal was to become world champion once, so to have had such a career is very special.”
Cairoli has won 93 Grand Prix’s to date and has been on the podium 177 times. Between 2009 and 2017 Cairoli took the world title in MXGP seven times. This season he is in third place after nine out of eighteen races, behind Tim Gajser and Romain Febvre.
