Although the European Championship in England was disappointing for the Dutch football players, Daniëlle van de Donk can still win an individual prize from the tournament.
The goal that the number 10 of the ‘Lionesses’ scored in the 3-2 group match against Portugal has been nominated for the election of Goal of the Tournament. Van de Donk shot the ball straight into the corner from the edge of the penalty area.
A panel of UEFA football experts has nominated ten goals. Fans can now cast their vote via the European Federation’s website.
Five goals from European champions England have been nominated, including the opening goal by Ella Toone in the final at Wembley against Germany. England’s Alessia Russo and Germany’s Alexandra Popp are competing for two of their goals. Russo seems particularly promising with her effective heel in the semi-final against Sweden (4-0). UEFA football experts put that goal at number 1, followed by Popp’s second goal in the semi-final against France (2-1). Van de Donk’s goal is in third place among the experts.
The Dutch football players got stuck in the quarterfinals. They lost in it after extension to France (0-1).
