Updated: 21:22

Three people were killed after being shot by a gunman in Rotterdam on Thursday, according to Dutch police.

In a press conference on Thursday evening, authorities revealed that the two people of the people killed in the attacks were a 39-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man. The man was a teacher at Rotterdam’s Erasmus Medical Center. Initially, the police said that the 14-year-old daughter of the woman was also shot and was seriously injured. However, later in the night, they announced that she had succumbed to her injuries.

Police have arrested a 32-year-old Rotterdam resident at the Erasmus MC who is thought to have carried out the attacks. Authorities said the suspect was himself a student at the Erasmus MC. He is known to authorities and had previously been convicted of animal abuse.

Dutch public broadcaster NOS published footage from the scene showing armed officers entering the hospital and what appears to be footage taken during the suspect’s arrest.

Police believe there was only one gunman involved in the shootings.

Dutch PM Mark Rutte tweeted that his thoughts were with the victims, their loved ones, and all those who were in great fear. He thanked the authorities for their work.

The incident was widely covered by both the Dutch and foreign press, including the BBC, Guardian, and CNN.
