Hockey players win via shoot-outs from Argentina in Pro League
3.10 pm: The Dutch hockey players have inflicted Argentina’s first loss of points of this season in the Pro League. The team of national coach Jamilon Mülders won at the Union complex in Malden, near Nijmegen, via shoot-outs. The match had ended 1-1. Argentina had won all of the previous 12 games in the Pro League.
Frédérique Matla opened the score at the end of the second quarter from a penalty corner. The Orange had opportunities to make it 2-0, but Freeke Moes missed a great chance at the end of the third quarter. With just over 2.5 minutes to go, Argentina tied the score via Victoria Granatto. In the shoot-outs, goalkeeper Josine Koning kept two Argentinian women from scoring. The Orange remained clear and took the bonus point (4-2) via captain Xan de Waard.
On Sunday, Argentina and the Netherlands will face each other again in the Pro League. Last year, the Orange squad won 3-1 against the South American hockey players in the Olympic final in Tokyo.
Beach volleyball players Stam and Schoon eliminated in Ostrava
11.11 am: The Dutch beach volleyball players Katja Stam and Raïsa Schoon got stuck in the quarterfinals at the Elite 16 tournament in Ostrava. Stam and Schoon, who lead the world ranking, were defeated by the Swiss duo Joana Heidrich/Anouk Vergé-Depré: 17-21 28-30. They gave up a big lead in the second set.
Stam (23) and Schoon (20) had convincingly won all group matches on the Czech sands. The young Dutch couple, who made their debut at the Tokyo Olympics last year, are having a strong season. They have already reached the final three times and won the Elite 16 tournament in the Mexican city of Rosarito in March.
In the men’s tournament in Ostrava, Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen will play in the quarterfinals against the Brazilian duo Alison/Guto on Saturday afternoon.
Basketball player Butler keeps Miami Heat in the running for NBA finals
08.35 am: Basketball player Jimmy Butler has brought Miami Heat back to side with Boston Celtics in NBA East Finals. Butler scored a whopping 47 points to force a decisive seventh game for the Heat in the best-of-seven series in the playoffs. The decision will be made in Miami on Sunday evening.
The Miami Heat had lost their lead twice in the series (1-0 and 2-1) and were on the brink of elimination after losing the fifth game. However, in the TD Garden of Boston, the Florida team tied the score again, mainly thanks to the outstanding Butler. Miami Heat won 111-103 on Friday night.
“Jimmy showed his winning mentality,” said coach Erik Spoelstra. “And with that mentality, we can’t lose.” The 32-year-old Butler had only scored 27 points in the previous three games with the Boston Celtics. “I let my team down for a while and I didn’t want to do that again,” said the American. “We know what we can do. We also know that we will win the next game at home.”
The winner of ‘Game 7’ qualifies for the big NBA final, in which the Golden State Warriors are the opponent. The Warriors took the title in the west by defeating the Dallas Mavericks 4-1 to reach the final for the sixth time in eight years.
Some Warriors players said they were counting on a final against the Boston Celtics. “That was exactly the motivation we needed,” said Miami Heat’s Bam Adebayo. “Everyone had already written us off and thought this series was over. Well, not so.”
The Miami Heat won the NBA Championship in 2006, 2012, and 2013. In 2020, Spoelstra’s team lost the final against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Boston Celtics won the last of 17 NBA titles in 2008. Since then, the Celtics only managed to reach the final once in 2010.
