Van Bommel’s assistant Hofland also left Wolfsburg

11.13 am: A day after the resignation of head coach Mark Bommel, his assistant Kevin Hofland also left VfL Wolfsburg. The club, the number 9 in the Bundesliga, made this known.

The 42-year-old Hofland was fired from Fortuna Sittard almost a year ago, where he was working on his first job as head coach. Another assistant, Vincent Heilmann, will remain part of the technical staff. Video analyst Alex Abresch is leaving, just like Hofland, who was a teammate of Van Bommel in the past and has a good relationship with him.

Wolfsburg decided to say goodbye to Van Bommel last weekend. The club started the season well, but failed to win the last eight games. On Saturday Freiburg was 2-0 too strong in Wolfsburg.

Michael Frontzeck is currently in charge as interim trainer. He led the first training on Monday after the Limburger’s dismissal.

Beijing Marathon is canceled this weekend

10.31 am: The Beijing Marathon is canceled this weekend. The running race in the Chinese capital is canceled “to prevent the risk of spreading the corona virus”. The announcement comes more than three months before the Winter Games, which will start in Beijing in 102 days. The Games start on February 4.

About 30,000 runners would participate in Beijing on Sunday, October 31. The Wuhan marathon was canceled last weekend.

The Chinese government is pursuing a ‘zero-covid strategy’. With curfews, extensive testing programs, contact tracing, strict quarantine rules and strict entry restrictions, the country is largely in control of the corona virus. Recently, however, despite the strict measures, there has been a series of local outbreaks of the Delta variant.

Following the Summer Games in Tokyo earlier this year, no foreign spectators are welcome at the Winter Games next year. According to the International Olympic Committee, fans from mainland China can attend the games, but must meet conditions to be determined.

Unvaccinated tennis players may still be welcome in Australia

07:53 am: Tennis players who have not had a corona vaccine may still be allowed to participate in the Australian Open. This is evident from a leaked email from Tennis Australia to the players on the WTA Tour. The email states that unvaccinated players must be quarantined for 14 days upon arrival in Australia. According to a government official, the measure is not yet final.

“We feel the need to contradict misleading information recently disseminated by other parties about the measures players must adhere to during next year’s Australian Open. With Victoria’s vaccination rate set to be 80 percent by the end of the week and 90 percent next month, conditions for players at the Australian Open have been confirmed to improve significantly,” the email read.

The measures will most likely also apply to male tennis players. That would be good news for nine-time champion Novak Djokovic, who is presumably unvaccinated. The world’s number 1 said he doubts whether he will participate in Melbourne early next year.

Last week it seemed that there would be a vaccination requirement for the first grand slam tournament of the year. “When the borders open, anyone wishing to enter Australia will have to be double vaccinated,” Australia’s Immigration Minister Alex Hawke told ABC Radio.

The Australian Open starts on Monday, January 17.

LA Lakers basketball players record first win of NBA season

07:38 am: The Los Angeles Lakers basketball players have recorded their first win of the NBA season. In its own Staples Center, Memphis Grizzlies were defeated 121-118.

The win prevented the Lakers from losing their first three games for the second time in four years. They lost to the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns early in the season. This was preceded by six consecutive defeats in the preparation.

Carmelo Anthony took 28 points for the Lakers, Anthony Davis and LeBron James came to 22 and 19 points respectively. On the side of the Grizzlies, Ja Morant was good for no less than 40 points.

Morant had a chance to equalize with less than 2 seconds left to play, but missed a free throw. Anthony grabbed the rebound and after being fouled, he converted both free throws.

Anthony, 37, rose one spot in the NBA’s all-time top scorers list. He lifted his points total to 27,423 and climbed to ninth place. He passed Moses Malone.
