Manchester City a few weeks without attacker Ferran Torres

6.23 pm: Manchester City cannot have Ferran Torres for a few weeks. The Spanish attacker has suffered an injury to his right foot during the last international match.

The 21-year-old Torres participated on Sunday in the final of the Nations League against France (2-1 loss). He was substituted in the second half.

Manchester City, which is third, will face Burnley next weekend in the Premier League. On Tuesday, Club Brugge in Belgium is the opponent in the Champions League.

Torres has scored two goals in four league games this season.

Defender St. Juste is waiting for shoulder surgery

6.03 pm: Jeremiah St. Juste has to undergo shoulder surgery. It was not announced how long the defender of the German club FSV Mainz 05 cannot play.

“Jer needs surgery. His absence will certainly be felt, not only because of his football abilities, but also because of his personality,” said coach Bo Svensson. “That said, we can’t change the facts so we have to find a way to make up for his absence.”

The 24-year-old St. Juste was left with a shoulder injury after the home game against Union Berlin a week and a half ago. He was substituted after 20 minutes.

Mainz will face Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday, Ajax’s opponent in the Champions League on Tuesday. After seven rounds in the Bundesliga, Mainz is ninth.

Sanchez exchanges Astana for Bahrain

5:35 p.m.: Bahrain-Victorious has signed Spanish cyclist Luis León Sánchez for 2022. The 37-year-old Spaniard leaves Astana after seven years.

Sánchez will start his nineteenth year as a professional rider next year. He previously drove for Caisse d’Epargne, Rabobank and Blanco. Sánchez won Paris-Nice, the Tour Down Under, four Tour stages and twice the Clasica San Sebastian. This year he won one race, the Ordiziako Klasika.

Bahrain, which announced earlier this week that Wout Poels is leaving the team, has also attracted Dane Johan Price-Pejtersen. The 22-year-old cyclist became world champion time trial with the promises last month. He comes over from Uno-X Pro Cycling Team.

O’Sullivan eliminated from Northern Ireland Open

4:53 PM: The Northern Ireland Open Snooker is over for Ronnie O’Sullivan. The young Chinese Yan Bingtao switched The Rocket with 4-3 out. O’Sullivan managed to ‘steal’ the 6th frame in spectacular fashion. Bingtao had brought the score to 71-0 with a break of 64 and there were still a maximum of 75 points on the table. The Rocket finished this job and managed to force a decider.

O’Sullivan had opportunities, but the balls did not listen to his commands and it was the 21-year-old Chinese who managed to reach the last 16 with this victory. In the head-to-head score it is now 2-2.

Little understanding among marathon runners for the tightened World Cup limit

3:45 pm: A number of Dutch toppers in the marathon have little understanding of the tightened limit for the World Cup in July 2022 in Eugene in the US. The Athletics Union requires a time of 2 hours and 10 minutes or faster on the marathon in order to participate in the World Cup. The limit is one and a half minutes below the World Athletics international requirement (2.11.30). “I think it is a pity that this international guideline does not apply to us. It is a discouraging policy,” says Frank Futselaar, one of the athletes who will run the Amsterdam marathon on Sunday.

“We have quite a wide group of good marathon runners in the Netherlands now. There were six athletes who had met the Olympic limit for Tokyo, quite unique. According to the international requirement, with our times we would have already qualified for the World Cup, but also for the European Championships to be held next summer in August. Then we could have worked towards that as a group”, says Futselaar, who has 2.11.30 as the best time.

Björn Koreman agrees. “It is indeed a pity that the association does not adhere to the international limit, because then we would all already have the limit for the European Championship in our pocket. I understand that the federation has tightened the limit because the latest generation of running shoes are demonstrably faster, but why is the Athletics Union the only one that sets the limits more sharply? That is special”, according to the athlete with 2.11.07 as personal best time.

Michel Butter has less trouble with it. “I think a limit of 2.10 for a global title fight is appropriate with modern developments, but I think that we as Dutch marathon runners should focus more on the European field. Given the times we run, that is much more our battleground. If we focus on the European Championship and sit there with a team at the front, that is very inspiring,” said 36-year-old Castricummer, who met the limit for the Summer Games with 2.10.30, but was designated as a reserve.

More than 31,000 participants marathon Amsterdam

13:39 o’clock: The 45th edition of the Amsterdam Marathon will have more than 31,000 participants next Sunday, about 9,000 of whom are from abroad. Nearly 10,000 athletes run the full marathon, the classic distance of 42.195 kilometers. The rest run shorter distances, such as the half marathon or 8 kilometers.

The organization of the running event in the capital presented these figures with pride, because the recent release of most corona restrictions has made runners eager again. “We are happy that we can run together again and very relieved that the municipality has given the green light after a long period of uncertainty,” said race director René Wit.

He specifically mentioned the international character of the Amsterdam Marathon. People from 107 different countries come running in the capital. A corona ticket is not necessary for participants and spectators. However, the visitors of the Olympic Stadium, where the start and finish are, must show such proof.

White recalled the previous edition, which was held in October 2019 without the existence of the corona virus. “In that year we had a record number of more than 45,000 participants, of which more than 17,000 in the marathon. The participants came from 140 countries. We won’t get to those numbers before Sunday, but I think we’ll make a very nice restart with 31,000 participants.”

Last year the marathon was canceled due to the corona virus. “We then organized a virtual marathon and still got 6000 people moving”, says Wit, who pointed out that his competition carries the ‘platinum label’. Amsterdam therefore belongs to the select group of twelve marathons in the world with this highest degree of the global athletics association.

The African top riders who have been attracted will attack the course record of 2.04.06, set in 2018 by Kenyan Lawrence Cherono, on an unchanged route. No fewer than five athletes have a personal best of under 2.05. The Ethiopian Leul Gebresilase has the best time with 2.04.02. Then his compatriot Tamirat Tola follows with a personal best of 2:04.06. He is the most acclaimed athlete with a bronze Olympic medal in the 10,000 meters in Rio 2016 and silver in the marathon at the 2017 World Cup in London.

This year’s Amsterdam marathon is also a battleground for the Dutch championship. Many Dutch toppers will start, including Olympian Khalid Choukoud, Michel Butter, Björn Koreman and Frank Futselaar. Among the women, Bo Ummels and Ruth van der Meijden are the main candidates for the title.

Two chess players still participate in NK after losing summary proceedings

11.20 am: Despite their lost summary proceedings, the chess players Sipke Ernst and Machteld van Foreest still participate in the Dutch National Championships in Hoogeveen. The four other chess players who had gone to court have withdrawn from tournament director Loek van Wely. “Sipke Ernst and Machteld van Foreest have indicated that they will participate after all,” said Van Wely a day after the summary proceedings in Haarlem.

The lawsuit revolved around the use of the corona admission ticket, which is mandatory for participants in the Dutch National Championships to show in the town hall of Hoogeveen. Title holder Lucas van Foreest, his 14-year-old sister Machteld, Ernst, former champion Sergei Tiviakov, Ivo Maris and Migchiel de Jong had gone to court because they wanted to participate in the tournament without a ticket. They proposed to move the NK to another location if necessary.

The preliminary relief judge in Haarlem rejected the demand of the six chess players. The National Championships start on Friday.
