Water polosters reach World League super final

2.13 pm: The Dutch water polo women have qualified for the final at the European final round of the FINA World League. The Orange squad defeated Italy 9-7 in the semifinals and will now face the winner of the game between Spain and Hungary.

The first three countries of the tournament in Tenerife qualify for the so-called Super Final, which will be held from 12 to 17 July at a location to be determined. By reaching the final, the team of national coach Evangelos Doudesis is now certain of participation.

Messi in selection for championship match Paris Saint-Germain

11.40 am: Lionel Messi returns on Saturday in the selection of Paris Saint-Germain, which can conquer the French title in a home game against Lens. The leader in Ligue 1 needs one point to be sure of the tenth championship at the highest level in club history.

Messi missed Wednesday’s away game against Angers due to an inflammation of the left Achilles tendon. The team of coach Mauricio Pochettino won 3-0, but saw competitor Olympique Marseille also win, keeping the difference 15 points. If PSG takes a point on Saturday evening, it can no longer be found with four more matches to play. Neymar, who was still suspended on Wednesday, is also back. The same goes for Presnel Kimpembe and the Italian Marco Verratti, who are returning after minor injuries, and the Dutch Georginio Wijnaldum and Xavi Simons.

Marseille will play against Stade Reims on Sunday and only has a (theoretical) chance at the title if PSG is defeated.

PSV player Oppegård successfully operated on

9.31 am: The 19-year-old defender Fredrik Oppegård was operated on Friday for appendicitis, his club PSV reported.

The operation of the left back was successful. The Norwegian is allowed to go home on Saturday and recover from the procedure. Oppegård has been out of circulation for some time. After that, he works on a comeback at De Herdgang.

At the beginning of this season, Oppegård made his debut in the main squad of PSV in the Johan Cruijff Scale against Ajax. Since then, trainer Roger Schmidt had him come in three more times.

Finalists back in the lead in NBA play-offs last season

09:07: The Milwaukee Bucks have regained the lead in the third game of the NBA playoffs’ first round with the Chicago Bulls. The defending champion in the American basketball league won 111-81 in Chicago and now leads the best-of-seven series 2-1.

Phoenix Suns, last season’s losing finalist, also took the lead. Phoenix won 114-111 at New Orleans Pelicans to also make it 2-1. Chris Paul scored 19 of his 28 points in the deciding fourth quarter. He also had 14 assists. Together with Deandre Ayton (28 points, 17 rebounds), Paul led the best team of the regular season to victory.

Grayson Allen was the top scorer at Milwaukee with 22 points. Greek star player Giannis Antetokounmpo finished with 18 points, as did teammate Bobby Portis, who also scored 16 rebounds.

In the first round of the Eastern Division playoffs, the Atlanta Hawks narrowly beat the Miami Heat: 111-110. For the Hawks, it was their first win against the Heat after two defeats. Trae Young became the match winner for the home team with a score in the final seconds. The game started with some delay after a suspicious package was found near the hall where Atlanta plays its home games.

Handboogbond sees national coach leave

8.27 am: The Dutch Archery Association will continue without a national coach for the time being. After a long period of employment, Ron van der Hoff has decided to say goodbye. The union is considering the succession.

Van der Hoff has been national coach and head coach for the past nine years and has been involved in, among other things, the Olympic silver that the mixed recurve team won at the Tokyo Olympics last year. Before that time, the Limburger already worked for the association as a coach of the para selection, the field team and the Dutch Juniors.

“Being a national coach is a great job, in which I have been able to experience beautiful things, work with good and talented athletes and be part of a team that has achieved great results,” Van der Hoff said via the NHB. “However, it is also a tough job, in which work-life balance is sometimes difficult to find. After these wonderful years, the time has come for me to find the balance in a different way.”

The association thanks Van der Hoff. “Ron has made great contributions to the archery sport in the Netherlands,” says federation director Arnoud Strijbis. Van der Hoff’s activities will be taken over shortly by the other members of the technical staff. “For the longer term, it will be examined how the roles, tasks and responsibilities are divided and which functions are appropriate. The whole of top sport and talent development is looked at in this regard,” according to the association.
