Raheem Sterling has again faced racism after reaching the Champions League final with Manchester City. That happened on Instagram.
“The racist remark sent to Raheem Sterling is unacceptable and we don’t want it on Instagram,” said a Facebook spokesperson, which owns Instagram. “We removed the comment and took action against the account that posted it.”
The incident happened less than two days after English football clubs and players ended their joint boycott of social media. They had decided to do so in order to reduce the increasing number of racist and discriminatory statements.
This will not be resolved overnight
This will not be resolved overnight, but we are committed to protecting our community from abuse, ”said the Facebook spokesperson.
Sterling has been the target of abuse on social media several times in the past. He said earlier: “I don’t know how often to say this, but football and the social media platforms need to step forward, show real leadership and take the right measures to tackle online abuse.”
