Berghuis played at Feyenoord last season as a right winger and he initially did that at Ajax. After an injury to Davy Klaassen, Berghuis ended up on ‘ten’. “I feel good in the ashes, with two wingers in front of me. I often get into scoring position and can often shift the game”, said Berghuis, who helped Ajax by opening the score after a difficult initial phase. „PSV had a few shooting opportunities that Remko Pasveer took well. After the 2-0 we had them.”
Ajax already won 4-0 against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday. After the 5-0 on PSV, it seems to be impossible for the team from Amsterdam. “I enjoy the moment. It can also be different,” says Berghuis.
Ten Hag: we had to fight in the match
Ajax coach Erik ten Hag found the difficult initial phase of the match against PSV (5-0) instructive. “We really had to fight our way into the game in the first fifteen minutes. That’s good for a team, that they feel what that is like,” he said.
Ajax survived the difficult initial phase. “Thanks again to Remko Pasveer. He dragged us through it,” said Ten Hag. “The opening goal of Steven Berghuis was a picture, after that it became easier. Until the 1-0 the opponent still believed in it, after the 2-0 it was done.”
Ten Hag complimented Berghuis and Sébastien Haller. “I am very happy with what he is showing,” he said about Berghuis. “A number of our players had a hard time before half-time, especially with the ball. Everything Steven does hits the mark. He is ballistic. He’s playing great at the moment. It’s fantastic to see him.”
Haller scored again. “There has been an unprecedented amount of criticism. Then I already told him: keep calm and make it happen. Mentally, Sébastien is very strong. He makes it happen. It’s so hard to play against him. He has more technique than anyone suspects,” said Ten Hag.
With the big win, Ajax took revenge for the defeat of 4-0 in August in the battle for the Johan Cruijff Scale. “We know what it was about then. Then you must be humble, when you get such a defeat. Today we had to take revenge, we did that.”
“You have to be very good at the ball against PSV,” said Ten Hag. “They can make the game difficult. And if they put pressure, then it’s best to play a long ball. But that’s not our game. We want to combine. We did that especially after rest. I am also very happy that the 2-0 came from a set piece”, he referred to a corner from Tadic and a goal from Haller. “After that it was over and we were able to entertain the audience. We sometimes played them from pillar to post. We are very pleased with this result.”
PSV player Götze: second goal was crucial
Mario Götze saw that PSV’s hopes for a good result at Ajax disappeared after the second goal against Sébastien Haller in the 56th minute. Ajax then ran away to 5-0. “That was not good for us, that goal from that corner. That was unfortunate,” Götze told ESPN. “In the end we lost 5-0. This was not a good day for us.”
PSV started well in the Johan Cruijff ArenA and had the first chances. Götze: „Ajax plays very well, especially on the ball. We had to think of something about that and we did that well for the first 10 to 15 minutes.”
The difference in quality became clear afterwards. Götze did not want to say after the large defeat that the difference with Ajax is too great and that PSV has no chance for the title. “I know from experience how difficult it is to become champion. A season is long and it’s all about being stable. It won’t be ready until the end of the season, not already.”
