A2. Introduction

In December 2022, the Dutch government announced its first government-wide global climate strategy. It describes how the Netherlands wants to strengthen its climate response both nationally and globally. The focus will be on her three pillars of the Paris Agreement: mitigation, adaptation and finance. Tackling climate change is also an integral part of Jordan’s Multi-Annual Country Strategy (MACS) 2023-2026. In our efforts, we are working closely with and coordinating with the Government of Jordan. The Netherlands will provide support for Jordan to meet her NDC climate goals. Specific mitigation measures to which the Netherlands will continue to contribute are energy efficiency in the water sector, nature-inclusive solutions in agriculture and investments in renewable energy. The Netherlands will contribute to adaptation by reducing water use through promoting water- and climate-friendly agriculture and making new water sources available through desalination, rainwater harvesting and wastewater treatment. The Netherlands will also help explore innovative green finance options. The Netherlands is keen to identify new and innovative approaches that are closely linked to water, private sector development and interventions in the agricultural sector.

B| Tasks and Responsibilities

B1. Task Description

Climate Policy Officers are responsible for:

  • Monitor and advise on the status and developments of legal, policy and institutional frameworks related to climate change in Jordan.

D| Work environment and contacts

The Climate Policy Officer is part of the General Policy Team led by the Embassy’s Deputy Representative. To coordinate bilateral and regional efforts, the Climate Policy Officer will work closely with the Dutch Regional Envoy for Water, Energy and Food, who is also part of the Embassy team in Amman.

The Dutch Embassy is located in Abdoun Al Shamari. The embassy team consists of his 40 staff members, including an attaché, a (regional) policy officer, and support his staff.
