Supervisor: Germans must use 20 percent less gas

Germans must use at least 20 percent less gas by December if they want to avoid a gas shortage next winter, says German energy grid regulator Klaus Mueller. Other European countries are aiming for a 15 percent reduction.

Russia’s Gazprom has reduced deliveries to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to 20 percent of capacity. This makes the need for Germany to save enough gas for next winter even more pressing.

“If we don’t save a lot and don’t get extra gas, we’ll have a problem,” Mueller said in an interview with the Welt am Sonntag newspaper, due Saturday. According to Mueller, in addition to the savings within Germany, the export of gas must also be reduced by 20 percent. In addition, Germany must import 10 to 15 gigawatts of gas to avoid shortages this winter.
