The police have arrested one of the two suspected gunmen of the shooting in the community center on Amsterdam’s Eastern Islands in Curaçao. Mohamed Bouchikhi (17), an intern who was not the target of the shooting, was killed in the attack.
The suspect, a 39-year-old man, was arrested on Tuesday and will be handed over to the Amsterdam public prosecutor. Another suspect, the now 28-year-old Emylio G., was already arrested in 2020. The perpetrators had in mind 19-year-old Gianni L., who was seriously injured in the shooting.
The man arrested this week probably fired the deadly shots at Bouchikhi with an automatic assault rifle, police say. According to Het Parool, it concerns the notorious Amsterdam criminal Randall D.
The police suspect that the two suspects wanted to take revenge on L. because he had an argument with D.’s son, the newspaper writes. D. is also associated with several liquidations. He was arrested for the liquidation of Lucas Boom, but released due to lack of evidence.
The neighborhood was shocked by the incident. There were children in the building due to a cooking class. Bouchikhi had just gotten groceries for that evening’s class when the two gunmen walked into the building.
A silent procession was held nearby and a memorial stone was placed.
