A 43-year-old man from Syria was arrested in the asylum seekers’ center in Sint Annaparochie. According to the prosecution, the man was suspected of being involved in terrorist acts by the Islamic State and other fighting groups in Syria and Iraq between 2011 and 2016.
The man has been in the Netherlands since 2019. He was staying in a mobile home on the grounds of the azc in the Frisian village when he was arrested this week. Reports of witnesses about him had been received by the police and the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
He is said to have been part of the brigade of Khan Shaykhun’s revolutionaries, insurgents fighting against the regime of Syrian President Assad. He is also said to have been involved in the Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist movement.
Recently, the police have recorded statements from witnesses. The examining magistrate at the court in Rotterdam has today decided that the Syrian will remain in prison for at least two more weeks.
