Iga Swiatek is doing slightly better in Rome. The Polish number one in the world reached the quarter-finals of the heavily occupied WTA tournament in Rome by beating Viktoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-1. It was her 25th win in a row.
But it was by no means as simple as the numbers make it seem for the Polish. Azarenka, former number one in the world, made an excellent return and prevented a double break in the first set. Swiatek fought back, but continued to struggle to maintain her serves that seemed endless.
The first set lasted no less than 80 minutes. But once it was in, Swiatek picked up steam. After 35 minutes, Azarenka was able to take a shower. Swiatek is in the quarterfinals against 21-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu.
