Team van Terpstra gets wild card for Tour; extra team welcome because of corona | Cycling

184 ridersNiki Terpstra’s team may also make an appearance in the Tour de France this year. Team Total Direct Energie received a wild card, just like the other French pro-continental teams Arkéa-Samsic and B&B Hotels KTM.

It is striking that one extra team is allowed to participate in the Tour de France this season. The UCI has given the Grand Tours (Tour, Vuelta and Giro) the opportunity to invite 23 instead of 22 teams. This was done to mitigate the severe financial consequences of the corona crisis. The teams will continue to consist of eight riders, so that the peloton starts with 184 men.

The nineteen WorldTour teams, including Jumbo-Visma, were already assured of participation. Mathieu van der Poel’s Alpecin-Fenix had already received an invitation, as a reward for first place in the ranking for pro-continental teams in 2020.

The Tour de France starts on Saturday 26 June in Brest. Three weeks later, on Sunday July 18, the traditional end of the day is on the Champs-Élysées.
