Young people are very attached to their mobile phone. Although the smartphone provides a lot of entertainment, it also has drawbacks, according to research by TeamAlert. Many young people believe that others should respond to their messages as quickly as possible and this is also expected of themselves. Having to respond immediately to messages creates unrest and social pressure. To help young people with this, TeamAlert is launching the campaign today ‘I’m OFF for a while’. With the campaign, TeamAlert wants to motivate young people to resist the social pressure of the smartphone when they want to.
Be JOMO more often
Central inside ‘I’m OFF for a while’ stands the principle Joy Of Missing Out (JOMO), also consciously enjoying the here and now, without constantly looking at your mobile. This is the opposite of Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO), where young people have the fear of missing out on things such as social media or WhatsApp. TeamAlert wants to challenge young people to be JOMO more often and to enjoy moments without their smartphone distracting them, such as during sports or meeting friends.
The campaign ensures that young people consciously choose to be JOMO at times when they find this important. TeamAlert hopes to achieve with this that they also make the choice in traffic not to use their telephone for a while. Maartje Burghgraef, director of TeamAlert: “With ‘I’m OFF for a while’ TeamAlert tackles the problem of smartphone use in traffic among young people at the source. If they can resist the temptation to constantly check their telephone in daily life, they will also be less likely to use their mobile in traffic.”
Social media campaign
In order to reach the young people as effectively as possible, TeamAlert is launching the campaign online via social media. The campaign runs from October 14 to November 10. In addition, TeamAlert is organizing a public campaign in the center of Utrecht to talk to young people about the campaign and to give them tips to be ‘OFF’ for a while.
